Bourbon and cigars have always been a natural pairing for many aficionados, but not all bourbonsβor cigarsβare created equal. General Cigar Co. is tapping into this harmonious combination once again with the return of Weller by Cohiba, a limited-edition cigar designed to be savored alongside Weller Bourbon. However, for its 2024 release, the company has made an exciting tweak to the formula.
Whatβs New for 2024?
In previous years, the Weller by Cohiba cigars featured binder leaves aged in barrels that once held Weller 12-Year Bourbon. This time, the 2024 edition steps it up a notch, using binders aged in barrels previously housing Weller Full Proof Bourbon. This change adds a deeper complexity to the cigar, matching the fuller body of Weller Full Proof.
According to Cohiba brand ambassador Sean Williams, this collaboration between the two premium products is more than just about flavor. He states, “Weller by Cohiba has become a staple in the Cohiba lineup and a great example of how the craftsmanship behind cigars and Bourbon mirror one another.”
The Blend and Construction
The Weller by Cohiba 2024 will be available in a single size, a 6-inch by 50 ring gauge Toro, offering a perfect balance of size and smoking duration. This cigar is wrapped in a lush Ecuador Sumatra leaf, with fillers sourced from Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.
What truly sets this cigar apart is the Connecticut broadleaf binder, the only component of the cigar that undergoes the bourbon barrel-aging process. This technique infuses the binder with subtle, rich notes of oak and sweetness, making the cigar a medium- to full-bodied experience.
New Look, Same Luxury
Along with the updated blend, the 2024 edition also comes with refreshed packaging. While the previous versions showcased black and gold to reflect the Weller 12-Year Bourbon branding, this yearβs release features blue and gold packaging and tubos that mirror the Weller Full Proof aesthetic. Itβs a small but impactful change, tying the cigar more closely to its bourbon counterpart.
A Premium Experience at a Premium Price
Made in the Dominican Republic at General Cigar Dominicana, the Weller by Cohiba 2024 doesnβt come cheap, with a suggested retail price of $29.99 per cigar. The cigars are sold in elegant 10-count boxes, and while the exact production numbers have not been disclosed, this release is expected to be as limited as its predecessors. Shipments will begin later this month, so cigar lovers should keep an eye out for this special blend hitting select retailers soon.
