Celebrating 180 Years: H. Upmann Anniversary Churchill Released Next Week

H. Upmann’s 180th Anniversary Churchill will reach retailers next week, slightly behind its originally scheduled release. This year marks the 180th birthday of the H. Upmann brand, and Altadis U.S.A. planned to release the commemorative cigars in June. However, shipments of these new cigars will leave the company’s Florida warehouse on Monday.

The cigars, produced in Nicaragua by A.J. Fernandez, come in a single sizeβ€”a Churchill measuring 7 inches by 50 ring gauge. Similar to the H. Upmann 175th Anniversary cigar, which was named Cigar Aficionado’s No. 10 Cigar of 2019, the 180th Anniversary is a collaboration between Fernandez and Rafael Nodal. Nodal serves as vice president of product capability for Tabacalera USA, Altadis U.S.A.’s parent company. While both the 175th and 180th Anniversary cigars share the same Churchill size, Nodal confirms that their blends differ.

One notable feature of this all-Nicaraguan cigar is its medio tiempo wrapper, grown from a hybrid seed. Medio tiempo refers to small leaves that occasionally grow on the top of a tobacco plant and are prized for their strength.

Each H. Upmann 180th Anniversary cigar is priced at $22.50 and is packaged in boxes of 10. With only 5,000 boxes produced, availability will be limited.

In addition to the Churchill release, an anniversary humidor containing 50 H. Upmann 180th Anniversary Toros (6 by 50) will also be available on Monday. These humidors are priced at $1,500 each, with a production run limited to just 180 units.
