Casa Havaneza Celebrates 160 Years of Excellence in Lisbon
Casa Havaneza, the oldest cigar shop in Portugal and one of the most iconic in the world, marked its 160th anniversary on April 19th with a grand celebration at Montes Claros Space β Lisbon Secret Spot.
A Rich History
Founded in 1864 by banker Henry Burnay, the first Casa Havaneza shop quickly became a hub for Habano aficionados and intellectuals like Eça de Queiroz, Ramalho Ortigão, and Fernando Pessoa. Recognized as a historic shop and Monument of Public Interest in 2018, Casa Havaneza has grown to include four locations in Portugal: three in Lisbon and one in Porto, all under the stewardship of Empor S.A., the exclusive Habanos distributor in Portugal.
The Anniversary Celebration
To commemorate this milestone, Empor S.A. organized a dinner for loyal customers and friends of Casa Havaneza. The event was graced by the Co-Presidents of Habanos, S.A., Mrs. Maritza Carrillo and Mr. Luis SΓ‘nchez-Harguindey, alongside Empor S.A.βs General Director, Mr. Pedro Rocha. They expressed their gratitude for the enduring loyalty to Cuban tobacco and Casa Havaneza.
Evening Highlights
Welcome Cocktail: The evening began with a cocktail reception for around 120 guests, featuring drinks made with Sandeman Port Wines, DiplomΓ‘tico Rum, and CodornΓu Ars Collecta blanc de blancs Cava. These beverages paired beautifully with two esteemed Habanos:
- El Rey Del Mundo Templarios (2021 Regional Edition for Portugal): A mild to medium-strength cigar (54 ring gauge x 120 mm length).
- Romeo y Julieta Hidalgos (LΓnea de Oro): A medium to strong cigar (57 ring gauge x 125 mm length), representing the pinnacle of the Romeo y Julieta brand.
Dinner: Set in a lively and joyful atmosphere, guests enjoyed a menu accompanied by specially selected wines: Quinta dos Carvalhais RosΓ©, Quinta de Azevedo Loureiro Escolha 2022, and Casa Ferreirinha Castas Escondidas. The evening’s entertainment featured a saxophonist and a Cuban musical group, adding to the celebratory mood.
A Toast to the Future
The evening concluded with the traditional cutting of the Anniversary Cake and a heartfelt toast with Champagne Taittinger Brut Reserve. This toast honored the 160-year legacy of Casa Havaneza and wished continued success and prosperity to its dedicated team.
